Using Magento as a headless backend

Stegcentralen is a Swedish reseller of industrial goods such as ladders, we redesigned their e-commerce website, a large platform with many references and features, including configurators to customize ladders or scaffolding.

The historical website was built with Magento so we preferred to keep it as the backend e-commerce technology, as its database holds thousands of suppliers, products and their variations. We upgraded Magento to the latest version and used it as a headless CMS for our frontend, which uses Vue.js through the VueStoreFront framework.

Custom E-Commerce with the latest technologies

Stegcentralen i Årjäng AB started its operations in 2005 to sale ladder products, but their catalogue as greatly expanded with new product categories as the number of suppliers has increased. They trusted us to re-designing and develop their old website built on an older version of Magento, the result is at the same time a more engaging and modern design and an update technology stack.

The first step was to understand their business needs and detail them in a prototype made of wireframes of every screen of the new website, it was then designed and developed by our team, and eventually was deployed on cloud servers.

What is implied when using Magento as a headless CMS?

When using Magento as a headless CMS (Content Management System), it implies that Magento is being utilized to manage and organize the content of a website or application while decoupling the front-end presentation layer from the back-end e-commerce functionalities.

In a headless CMS architecture, the content management system is responsible for storing and delivering content, and the presentation layer (front end) is handled by a separate system. Magento, in this context, serves as the back-end system, managing product information, inventory, and other e-commerce-related data.

This is where Vue Storefront comes into place, it’s a frontend interface library, that we used as a basis to create Stegar’s e-commerce website. it includes frontend components to display products, carts and ordering. Being a Vue.js library, we could customize to reflect the exact design wanted.
