Free E-commerce Plugin for Wordpress

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is an open source e-commerce plugin for WordPress. It is designed for small to large-sized online shops. As stated on their websiteWooCommerce powers over 28% of all online stores, which is not surprising as WordPress itself is used on a large percentage of website worldwide. Automattic, the company that created WordPress, acquired WooCommerce in 2015, it made sense being WordPress’ most popular e-commerce platform, and gives it even more stability as a large team of web developers now maintains the plugin.

The main draw to WooCommerce is obvisously the fact it is free and based on WordPress which many website owner and webmasters value as its a very widely used technology and thus there are lots of web developers and cheap hosting solutions available.

At Outsourcify, we have years of experience building online stores, we have used Prestashop, Magento and Shopify in the past, we are also often building a custom e-commerce solution for our customers, but WooCommerce is largely the one we have the most experience on.

A video to answer “What is WooCommerce ?”

Running an online store by yourself

WooCommerce allows you to display products (or services) you offer on your WordPress website, and gives your website’s visitors the possibility to add them into a cart which after checkout generates an order. It’s a free WordPress plugin that gives the basis to an online store, on top of which countless additional features can be added as extensions, likely other WordPress plugins for example to manage payments and shipments.

What strikes with WooCommerce is that it’s quite easy to use and once the online store is designed, set up and installed on a trustworthy hosting platform,  it’s simple enough to allow the store owners to handle its daily use, managing the products and the orders. It is arguably not a simple task to sell online, and using the right tool is primordial, a lot of parameters come into consideration, the type of products (simple, virtual/services, downloadable etc), all of their potential variations (color, size etc), tax calculations, shipment considering location, weight, carrier,  payment gateways, and everything required to process transactions.
